KU's Personal Financial Planning Club

In case you didn't know already, Kutztown University has a Personal Financial Planning (PFP) major that pairs well with the Finance major. I added the PFP major the beginning of my junior year at Kutztown when I took the Financial Planning course that was part of my finance track since I was originally just a finance major. I immediately was intrigued by the profession through my courses at KU that were taught by mainly one professor, Dr. Kramer. Dr. Kramer is an advocate for the CFP registered program that he started at KU and made it what it is today. This program finally gave me the relief of knowing where I wanted to go with my degree, and I am further confident in this decision through the first-hand experience of the field I have received here at Haas Financial.

When I joined the major, I wanted to become more involved in the PFP Club at Kutztown. Unfortunately, the club only had two meetings last year, so there was not much for me to get involved with since the club did not have much going on. I decided that I wanted to run for an officer position, so I reached out to Dr. Kramer at the end of last school year. Dr. Kramer told me no one else was running for President, so I could have the position. I made it my mission to give the club the effort it deserved and came up with some ideas for the club to make it more active.

With some research, I put together a plan for this school year and discussed it with my other officers. We decided we would have four meetings per semester by bringing in various CFPs to talk about their experience in the field. Additionally, I registered the club with the school, so we could receive Maroon Status this semester, which just means we can start to receive funding to further the club’s goals. Another plan of mine was to bring the club officers to the CFP Board’s first ever Connections Conference which happened last October. Amazingly, I was successful in that which I also wrote a blog about back in October if you’re interested in how I made that happen:

In addition, I wanted to get the word out to more students about the amazing program we had available to us since I felt a lot of students didn’t know it existed. I would not have found out about this major being available if it was not required for me to take the Financial Planning course. We created an Instagram account to get the word out and post updates on the club. Also, we had a stand at the Involvement Fair which was a success since I got to introduce myself to lots of students and inform them about our plans for the club. Another idea I had was to host an alumni panel with the Financial Management Association (FMA) club and Accounting Club consisting of a CFP, CFA, and CPA. We successfully had that meeting last month, and it went very well. Just this week, I brought in Ben and Adam as guest speakers, and they hosted a Q&A session to answer any questions students had regarding the profession or their personal experiences. It has been amazing hearing from so many different professions in the field, and I am so grateful to all the speakers who took time out of their day to come and present to the students at KU.

Overall, the opportunity to be President of this club has been one of my greatest takeaways from my education at Kutztown. I never could have imagined meeting all the goals I set last year and seeing all these ideas I had actually come to life. My hope for the future is this club continues to be run by students who care about and value this program as much as I do. I can truly say the PFP program at KU and Dr. Kramer have set me down an amazing path. I genuinely would not have the clarity of my future that I have today without that program, so I am eternally grateful that I found it.
