Where Memories Sprout
This time of year is always my favorite. I love to see which of my early spring flowers have sprouted up and which ones are budding and ready to burst. My parents instilled a love of gardening in me from when I was very young. Of course, I thought I was too cool for that whenever I was forced to pull weeds in my mom’s flower beds.
It wasn’t until my husband and I bought our home that I really became fascinated with flowers and plants. The woman who owned our house before us had planted so many flowers in the numerous beds around our home. Our first spring was so exciting! Each day we would see different flowers bloom all the way through the summer. I couldn’t help wanting to plant something of my own to add to the beauty. I started with some flowers but while I was shopping, I came across some vegetable plants. The thrill of growing something myself was sparked by the knowledge that I could enjoy the fruits (and vegetables!) of my labor.
I’ve had good growing seasons and bad growing seasons, but I have learned so much in the process. It takes practice and patience to grow something. After I started this hobby, my mom and I really bonded over our love of nurturing these plants and digging in the dirt. She and my dad revamped their whole vegetable garden and every time I came over, she just had to give me a “tour” and show me how everything was growing. I loved having that shared love to bond over.
I love the hope that comes at this time of year. In the quiet moments spent tending my garden this spring, I find a sense of peace and connection to my mom. Even though I miss her terribly, the act of nurturing these plants is a comforting ritual that reminds me of her. The hope that springs from the earth feels like a gentle echo of her own vibrant spirit, a reminder that even after loss, life and beauty continue to emerge.
