Changes to How You Access Social Security’s Online Services

Summarized by Benjamin N. Haas using the Friday, July 12th 2024 Press Release written by Mark Hinkle, Press Officer, Social Security Administration

The Social Security Administration announced recently that they are making changes to the way “customers” access Social Security’s online services, including one’s personal my Social Security account. The changes do NOT affect benefits in any way. The changes are meant to simplify your sign-in experience and to better align with federal authentication standards.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • If you created your my Social Security account before September 18, 2021, you will still be able to use your username and password to sign in. However, you will not be able to do so for much longer.
  • In the near future, all users will need to have an account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me – to access your personal my Social Security account and other online services.
  • Account holders are encouraged to sign-in now. When the user logs in, they will be presented with an option to easily transition to Login.gov. Once their account is successfully linked, a confirmation screen will appear, and they will have immediate access to their personal my Social Security services or other service that they were attempting to access.
  • Existing Login.gov or ID.me account holders do NOT need to create a new account or take any action.

If you’ve never set-up an online portal, know that my Social Security accounts are free, secure, and provide personalized tools for everyone, whether receiving benefits or not. People can use their account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, or manage the benefits they already receive.
