In The Bulb, There Is A Flower
My Grandmother passed away on Friday 3/21/2025. Barbara Kitson was the only grandmother I ever knew on my mother’s side, even though she was not my mother’s birth mother. Jane Kitson left this earth too soon, many years before I was born. But my “Gram” as we called her, taught me that love and the spirit of family aren’t blood requirements – they come from the heart and she was as loving as they come. Gram was the type of grandmother who would write personal messages in her birthday and Christmas cards. She would knit her grandkids Christmas gifts instead of buying something cheap. And even at 94 years old, she would call you on your birthday to sing happy birthday and let you know she was thinking of you. She was a special lady in so many ways.
At her funeral, Gram had a hymn selected that I had never heard before. The title of the hymn is “In the Bulb There is a Flower.” Three things in life can make me cry pretty much on the spot; a bride walking down the aisle, the golden buzzer in America’s Got Talent, and a good hymn at a funeral. Well, Gram’s hymn choice did it for me – “In the Bulb There is a Flower” was the end of my composure. As I reflect on the life of Gram and the angst that I know many of you are feeling about financial markets, life savings and what can feel like an uncertain future, I share these words with you – a hymn my Gram would surely be happy for you to hear and reflect on right now. Whether you are religious or not, blue or red, happy or sad, read these words and know that I will always lead you and your financial plan from a place of hope, trusting all storms pass in time.
In the bulb there is a flower;
in the seed, an apple tree;
in cocoons, a hidden promise:
butterflies will soon be free!
In the cold and snow of winter
there's a spring that waits to be,
unrevealed until its season,
something God alone can see.
There's a song in every silence,
seeking word and melody;
there's a dawn in every darkness
bringing hope to you and me.
From the past will come the future;
what it holds, a mystery,
unrevealed until its season,
something God alone can see.
In our end is our beginning;
in our time, infinity;
in our doubt there is believing;
in our life, eternity.
In our death, a resurrection;
at the last, a victory,
unrevealed until its season,
something God alone can see.
